This collection delves deep into the fascination with awnings, a concept birthed from the vibrant streets of New York City’s Chinatown. ‘Awning’ light Sculpture is a series that retains the foundational principles of its electrically charged, storefront-inspired predecessors, yet ventures boldly into uncharted realms. Each piece, with its unique composition of acrobatic geometry and light, exerts a magnetic allure.
Every object in this series was meticulously crafted in partnership with a local metal shop in New York City’s Chinatown. While the overarching vision and the intricate relationship between the structure and surface, the ‘skin and bone’, were stringently defined, each sculpture bears unique, industry-specific imperfections that add character. Constructed from steel and enveloped in vinyl, these pieces juxtapose fragility and charm with the raw, industrial feel reminiscent of factory-produced items like automotive parts or skate ramps.
